I have been thinking about how the Biblical view of womanhood contrasts so sharply from our cultural view of womanhood and even from a traditional view. Modern culture encourages women to be career-driven, power-hungry control freaks. I could not even count the number of times I have personally been told I need to be more pushy and aggressive. It is often hard to explain that I have already spent a lifetime trying not to be that way. (My siblings could testify to many lapses!) On the other hand, a more traditional view of women, while allowing them to remain in the sphere of the home, also permits women to be whiny little creatures with little more to do than complain about their husbands. The Bible gives us a far greater and grander vision for the role of women.

“Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord;
whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well,
and are not afraid with any amazement.”
(I Peter 3:6)

Fear. We see it in women’s and girl’s lives all the time. Multitudes of women live in bondage to fear. Yet the Bible commands us very specifically to not be afraid. What happens when women are not afraid? Here is an example from the 20th century:

The communists convened a congress of all Christian bodies in our parliament building. There were four thousand priests, pastors, and ministers of all denominations. These four thousand priests and pastors chose Joseph Stalin as honorary president of this congress. At the same time he was president of the World Movement of the Godless and a mass murderer of Christians. One after another, bishops and pastors arose in our parliament building and declared that communism and Christianity are fundamentally the same and could coexist. One minister after another said words of praise toward communism and assured the new government of the loyalty of the Church.

My wife and I were present at this congress. My wife sat near me and told me; “Richard, stand up and wash away this shame from the face of Christ! They are spitting in His face.” I said to my wife, “If I do so, you lose your husband.” She said, “I don’t wish to have a coward as a husband.” (From Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand )

So Richard Wurmbrand rose and spoke. He spoke of Christ and that our loyalty is due first to Him. Because of his wife’s fearlessness, the shame was washed away from the face of Christ. Yet he and his wife both paid dearly for this with many years in prison.

The fears of women often hold men back from fulfilling their God-given callings. Do our words and our presence influence men to stand up boldly and even dangerously for Christ? Or do they hold back because of our critical words? Even in day to day life, our words and attitudes have a profound influence on men and boys of all ages.

The Bible challenges us to not be afraid. People are spitting on the face of Christ in every fashion and form. Who will fearlessly wipe it away?
